Wandering

Wandering is a risk that the nursing home must recognize and control through their plan of care. The nursing home must provide each resident with the appropriate level of supervision to prevent dangerous wandering habits. Exit doors should be alarmed to prevent residents from leaving the facility unsupervised. Personal alarms can also be used for the most serious wandering residents or residents prone to escape. The nursing home staff must also respond appropriately to alarms in order to ensure the safety of the residents. Failure to control wandering puts residents at risk for falls and other injuries.
